The New York Post reported that smoke was reportedly seen emanating from the left engine and pilots called in for an emergency. They also said they couldn’t control the plane.
This comes hours after the incident in South Korea’s Muan International Airport, where a Jeju Air flight flying from Bangkok carrying 181 passengers and crew crashed while it attempted to land killing all but 2 people.
Although the Dutch Airlines plane landed safely, it skidded off the runway shortly afterwards, it finally stopped in a grassy area beside the runway. According to an Anadolu report, the incident occurred due to a hydraulic system failure.
All 176 passengers and six crew members on board, were unharmed and were safely evacuated from the plane. An investigation has been launched into the incident. According to the New York Post, the KLM technical team arrived in Sandejford “to investigate the circumstances of the incident together with local authorities and the airport in accordance with aviation procedure, and retrieve the aircraft as soon as possible,” according to the airline’s statement.
South Korea’s Jeju Air was also a Boeing 737-800 which attempted a belly landing at 9:03 am local time since its landing gear failed to deploy. The aircraft skidded along the runway before it hit the airport’s perimeter wall. It broke into two pieces at the front and tail sections and burst into flames.
