ISKCON Temple In Utah Attacked In Suspected Hate Crime, India Responds

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks against Hindu places of worship in the US. In March this year, the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Chino Hills, California, was vandalised.

The ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah, renowned globally for its vibrant Holi celebrations, has been targeted in what appears to be a hate-driven shooting incident. Over several nights, an estimated 20 to 30 bullets were fired at the temple and surrounding areas while devotees were inside.

According to ISKCON authorities, the bullets caused significant damage to the temple structure, including intricately hand-carved arches. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the emotional and financial toll has been heavy. The attack occurred at night, with worshippers and guests present inside the building.

Indian Consulate Condemns Attack

The Consulate General of India in San Francisco strongly condemned the incident, calling for swift justice. In a statement posted on X, the Consulate expressed full support to the affected community and urged local authorities to investigate the matter and apprehend those responsible.

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks against Hindu places of worship in the US. In March this year, the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Chino Hills, California, was vandalised days before a controversial 'Khalistan referendum' in Los Angeles. Slogans and hate messages had been scrawled on temple walls in that case.

Community Leaders Raise Alarm

Community groups like the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) have linked the rise in temple attacks to increasing anti-Hindu rhetoric. CoHNA pointed to multiple incidents since 2022 and called for serious inquiry into extremist links, particularly those coinciding with pro-Khalistan activities.

Despite mounting concerns, Hindu leaders continue to advocate for peace and unity. BAPS Public Affairs noted, “Our common humanity and faith will ensure that peace and compassion prevail,” emphasising resilience in the face of hate.
