4 Killed In Shooting On Revered Shiite Shrine In Iran, 1 Suspect Arrested: Reports
A mass shooting happened at Shah Cheragh shrine located in downtown Shiraz, less than a year after a similar incident happened on the same site.
At least four people were killed in a Sunday shooting at a Shiite Muslim shrine in Iran’s south, state media informed. According to the country's official news agency IRNA, the attack took place late on Sunday at Shah Cheragh shrine located in downtown Shiraz, less than a year after a similar mass shooting happened on the same site. “Four people have been killed so far following a terrorist attack by two armed men on the holy shrine of Shah Cheragh” in the city of Shiraz, IRNA reported.
The agency cited early reports as stating that the attacker opened fire at people after being confronted by security guards at the gates of the shrine.
According to Tasnim news agency, one of the suspected assailants was arrested while the other is at large.
In October last year, a mass shooting took place at the revered shrine leaving 13 dead and 30 wounded. The attack later was claimed by Daesh extremists, news agency AFP reported.
According to the judiciary’s Mizan Online news website, Iran hanged two men in public over the October attack identifying them as Mohammad Ramez Rashidi and Naeem Hashem Qatali but not revealing their nationalities.
As per AFP, authorities had earlier informed that people from other countries including neighboring Afghanistan were involved in the attack.
Mohammad Ramez Rashidi and Naeem Hashem Qatali were hanged at dawn on July 8 on a street near the shrine in Shiraz, the capital of Fars province, IRNA reported earlier.
Mizan stated that the duo had been convicted of “corruption on earth, armed rebellion, and acting against national security” as well as “conspiracy against the security of the country.”
Rashidi had confessed to having collaborated with Daesh to carry out the shooting, it stated.
In this case, three other defendants were sentenced to prison for five, 15, and 25 years for being members of Daesh, Fars chief justice Kazem Moussavi said, as reported by AFP.
As per AFP's report, authorities said that the main assailant identified as Hamed Badakhshan, a man in his 30s, died of injuries sustained during his arrest.
In November last year, Tehran stated that 26 people from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, and Tajikistan had been arrested in connection with the attack, the report mentioned.
