First Visuals Emerge As 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Istanbul

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday. No immediate reports of damage were reported, but people evacuated buildings as structures rumbled.

A strong earthquake of 6.02 magnitude strikes Turkey’s Istanbul on Wednesday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). According to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Authority (AFAD), the quake took place at 12:49 [09:49 GMT] on Wednesday in the Marmara Sea off the coast of Istanbul’s Silvri area and registered a preliminary 6.2 magnitude.

There were no immediate reports of the damage; however, people evacuated buildings as structures rumbled in the city, located on the European and Asian shores of the Bosphorus Strait.

In a post on X, Türkiye’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said emergency authorities have begun “field assessments” and offered well wishes to those affected.

Meanwhile, the first visuals of the quake have flooded the internet. In a video posted on X by Disasters Daily, the things kept in the dining hall of the house could be seen falling.

“All networks are currently down, people are scared to go back to their homes. There were 6 stronger aftershocks,” the video was posted by Disasters Daily with the caption.

In another video on X, the people in the office could be seen baffled as the earthquake hit the region.

The workers seemingly in the office could be seen holding the tables in the office so that they could balance themselves.
