California: At Least 8 Killed, Several Wounded After Deadly Shooting In San Jose; Suspect Dead

The gunfire took place at a light rail facility that is next door to the sheriff's department and across a freeway from the city airport.

California: At least ight people were killed and several others were wounded after a person with a gun opened fire in a light rail yard in San Jose, California, on Wednesday.  Deputy Russell Davis says the suspect also died Wednesday in the shooting at the Valley Transportation Authority light railyard.

No identities have been released.

According to initial reports, the gunfire took place at a light rail facility that is next door to the sheriff's department and across a freeway from the city airport. The location where the incident took place is a transit control center that stores trains and has a maintenance yard.

Officials informed that the shooting took place around 6:30 am adding that the victims in the gunfire were largely Valley Transportation Authority employees. 

Two patients were transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, according to spokesperson Joy Alexiou. One person was pronounced dead upon arrival, and the other was in critical condition.

"Our hearts are pained for the families of those we have lost in this horrific shooting," San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said on Twitter.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a tweet that his office was in close contact with local law enforcement and monitoring this situation closely.

It is being said that personnel from the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have arrived at the crime scene and took control of the situation. 

Wednesday's attack was the county's second shooting in less than two years. A gunman killed three people before killing himself at a popular garlic festival in Gilroy in July 2019.
