New Delhi: Ugadi is a Hindu festival that falls on the first day of the Telegu new year. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana are the states that celebrate Ugadi the most.

This festival brings with it the freshness of a new year and enjoyment among people, ranging from floral designs on the floor to delicious dinners symbolising the regional cuisines. Ugadi is observed on the first day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Chaitra.

The festival of Ugadi, celebrated on the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month, falls on April 2 this year.

Importance of Ugadi

Yugadi is the beginning of the year. Yuga is a period, while adi denotes the commencement of something. The Yugadi commemorates Lord Brahma's work in creating the universe. It is also the event that heralds spring's arrival and the warmer weather after the winter. This happy occasion is commemorated with joy and unity among our loved ones.

People regard Ugadi as an auspicious occasion and mark it to start new endeavours, such as beginning a new business, purchasing a new house, or holding a housewarming celebration. It is thought that any work starting on this day yields positive results.

How Is Ugadi celebrated

The preparations for the Ugadi festival begin a week before the event. People clean their houses and purchase new clothes. The house entrances are decorated with mango leaves.

After worshipping their gods, people welcome the new year. Devotees in several parts of south India begin their days with an oil bath. Relatives also come together to celebrate this festival.
