Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case: Social Media Campaign For Convict AG Perarivalan's Release

Will Perarivalan ever taste the freedom; will he ever see the dawn of a free life breaking the shackles he has been witnessing for 30 years? His supporters are pouring in on social media with such slogans.

Chennai: AG Perarivalan, one of the accused in assassination case of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was an engineering student who dreamt of a bright future like any regular young man in the city. The alleged crime awarded him to life imprisonment along with six other convicts, namely Murugan, Nalini, Santhan, Robert Pious, Jayakumar, Ravichandran involved in the incident.

The historical criminal case shattered his world and changed his life forever.

Exactly on this day on June 11, 1991, Perarivalan was detained in connection with the assasination case. He was 19-years-old man when he was arrested for procuring two nine-volt batteries used in the bomb blast in killing of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 in Sriperumbudur city, Tamil Nadu.

It has been 30 years since he has been serving his life sentence, several petitions have filed by his mother Arputham Ammal advocating his innocence in the case, but his helping aid has not seen any ray of hope, though he got paroles time and again.

"The COVID-19 spread and the consequent deaths in Tamil Nadu prisons are creating a frightening situation. The prison medical team has already said that the infections create a risky situation for Perarivalan, who is already suffering from several other diseases. Also, there is a need to continue his medical treatment," Arputham Ammal in a social media post. She also submitted her petition regarding the same to CM M.K Stalin.

And considering her petition, Stalin even ordered 30 days of leave to AG Perarivalan on medical grounds.

Now the supporters plan to run a social media campaign to get Perarivalan and his mother justice. Netizens are pouring in with emotional slogans in support of Arputham Ammal voicing for the release of Perarivalan.

It’s noteworthy, on May 20, CM M.K. Stalin wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind seeking to remit the life sentence of Perarivalan and six convicts and to direct their immediate release.
