An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale occurred near Sikkim-Nepal border at 2049 hours on Monday. The National Center for Seismology reportedly said that the earthquake struck at a depth of 30 km from the surface. The location has been spoted as 27.17 N ; 88.89 E
As per the early inputs, the epicentre of the earthquake was 25 km east-southeast of Sikkim's capital Gangtok.
Besides Sikkim, mild earthquake tremors were felt in Assam, north Bengal and Bihar. In Bengal, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and few other districts witnessed moderate quake this evening at about 8.50 PM.

News agency PTI quoted an official confirming the incident. He informed that people got frightened and rushed out of their houses but no loss of life or property has been reported so far.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Chief Ministers of four states to take stock of the damage due to the earthquake. Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed the Disaster Management Department and all the District Magistrates to conduct an immediate assessment of any damage caused by the earthquake in their area and monitor the situation continuously. The Chief Minister directed the officers to ensure proper treatment to the people and alert.
