It is a known fact that Maruti will cease sales of its diesel cars by April 2020, owing to the new BS 6 emission norms. That means starting April 2020, Maruti will sell only petrol cars in the country. While this won’t affect cars that are already offered with petrol engines, diesel-only cars like the Vitara Brezza and the S-Cross will now get a petrol powertrain soon. The petrol- powered versions of both the SUVs will debut at the 2020 Auto Expo.
The S-Cross is expected to be powered by the BS 6-compliant version of the new 1.5-litre petrol unit that debuted on the Ciaz and also powers the Ertiga. It is equipped with mild hybrid tech and makes 105PS of power and 138Nm of torque with a 5-speed MT. This engine is slightly more powerful than the S-Cross’ current 1.3-litre diesel unit that makes 90PS and 200Nm but
makes less torque.
The Brezza, on the other hand, is likely to get the new 1.2-litre Dual Jet VVT petrol engine with a mild hybrid system from the Baleno. It makes 90PS of power and 113Nm of torque. Since it is a 1.2-litre unit, this will help the Brezza qualify for the low tax bracket which is implemented on sub-4m cars. However, instead of the 1.2-litre unit, Maruti might introduce the Ciaz’s 1.5-litre
engine or Baleno RS’ 1.0-litre engine on the Brezza.
The 1.5-litre (105PS/138Nm) engine will surely attract more taxes compared to the 1.2-litre engine but then the Brezza won’t be the only sub-4m SUV to feature a 1.5-litre petrol unit. The EcoSport is also powered by a 1.5-litre engine that makes 123PS and 150Nm. It is to be noted that no matter what engine the Brezza gets, it will be more or as powerful as the 90PS diesel Brezza currently on sale in the country.
As far as pricing is concerned, petrol versions of both the SUVs are expected to be priced at par or at a lower price compared to their diesel counterparts, irrespective of the engine, transmission option or the mild hybrid tech they get. Here are the current prices both the SUVs.
