Maharashtra: 10 Dead, Several Feared Trapped As 3-Storied Building Collapses In Bhiwandi; PM Offers Condolences

The incident took place at around 3:30 am and it is being said that around 21 flats collapsed while most of the residents were sleeping.

Mumbai: At least ten people lost their lives and several are feared trapped after a three-storied building collapsed in Maharashtra's Bhiwandi district in Thane. According to reports, around 20 people have been rescued from the debris of the building and the evacuation work is still under progress. The incident took place in the wee hours of Monday and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached the accident spot soon after the incident came to light. A child was pulled alive by the NDRF and still around 20-25 people are feared trapped. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences and prayed for quick recovery of those injured in the incident. He also said that all possible assistance is being provided to the affected. "Death toll rises to eight in Bhiwandi building collapse incident. Five more people have been rescued," Thane Municipal Corporation PRO said. "NDRF teams on-site, 20-25 feared trapped (TBC)... CANINE SEARCH ON... Technical search on... More #NDRF teams en route... details follow," DG NDRF Satya Narayan Pradhan said in a tweet. The incident took place at around 3:30 am and it is being said that around 21 flats collapsed while most of the residents were sleeping. A civic official told news agency PTI that the building, situated at Patel compound of Narpoli near Dhamankar Naka, collapsed at 3.40 AM, while the residents were asleep.
