'All Concerns Of Locals Will Be Addressed': Amit Shah Assures BJP Delegation On Resolving Lakshadweep Crisis

In the past few days, protests are brewing in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep over the administrative reforms announced by the island's administrator Praful Patel, which have been described by protesters as anti-people.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with party president JP Nadda on Monday met a delegation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Lakshadweep and assured that all concerns of the locals will be addressed in regards with the situation in the union territory. 

BJP's in-charge for Lakshadweep, AP Abdullakutty in an official statement said, "A BJP delegation from Lakshadweep met party chief JP Nadda and Home Minister Amit Shah. We thoroughly discussed the situation in Lakshadweep. Shah said 'we're with people of Lakshadweep. We'll address all of their worries'." 

The remarks came after several leaders including Lakshadweep MP and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Mohammed Faizal, accused Administrator Praful Khoda Patel of implementing anti-people rules and regulations. The leaders have appealed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to 'listen to the outcry of the local people and send in a new Administrator'.

Laskhadweep's administrator Praful Patel, who is a former BJP leader also served as the home minister of Gujarat, has gone ahead to implement new reforms which didn’t go down well with the locals and the neighbouring state of Kerala. 

One of the core issue is the draft Lakshadweep Development Authority Regulation 2021 (LDAR), which empowers the administrator to remove or relocate islanders from their property, for town planning or any developmental activity. Besides, the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA), introduced in January 2021, offers the power to government in detaining a person without any public disclosure for a period of up to one year.
