Kolkata Waterlogged Due To Overnight Rains; IMD Predicts Heavy Showers, Thunderstorm For Bengal

West Bengal will continue to receive heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms over the next two days. The weather department has predicted more rainfall and thunderstorm activity over West Bengal on June 17-19.

Kolkata: Several parts of Kolkata, the city of joy reported waterlogging on Thursday morning following heavy overnight rains. The early morning high tide in Hooghly River added to the problem.

West Bengal will continue to receive heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms over the next two days. The weather department has predicted more rainfall and thunderstorm activity over West Bengal on June 17-19.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) released a notice saying that due to the presence of Cyclonic circumstances over Gangetic West Bengal and Neighbourhood region and strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal widespread rainfall activity is likely to continue over the districts of West Bengal during the 17th to 19th June 2021.

“Light to moderate rain with a thunderstorm and lightning very likely to occur at most places over the districts of West Bengal during 17th to 19th June 2021. On 19th June 2021 light to moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning very likely to occur at most places over the districts of Sub Himalayan West Bengal and at many places over the districts of Gangetic West Bengal,” the notice read.

IMD issued a warning for 17th June to 19th June in the state.

  • 17/06/21 - Orange Warning - Heavy to very heavy (07-20cms) rainfall likely to occur at two places over North and South 24 parganas, West Midnapore, Bankura, Purulia, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong districts.Yellow warning- Heavy rain (07-11cms) likely to occur at one or two places over Kolkata, West Midnapore, Jhargram, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Alipur districts.
  • 18/06/21 - Orange Warning - Heavy to very heavy (07-20cms) rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over Murshidabad, Birbhum, West Burdwan, Bankura, and Purulia districts.
  • 19/06/21- Yellow warning- (07-11cms) likely to occur at one or two places over Murshidabad, Birbhum, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Coochbehar, and Alipurduar districts.

Fishermen Warning

Yellow warning - Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea along and off the West Bengal coast during 17th and 18th June 2021.

More rainfall may lead to further waterlogging in low-lying areas of the state, including Kolkata. Traffic congestion due to waterlogging and intense rainfall is expected to plague citizens over the next few days.

Meanwhile, as the water levels continue to rise, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea on Thursday and Friday. People have also been advised to stay indoors over warnings of lightning and thunderstorm.
