IT Ministry Took To 'Koo' Calling Twitter's Blog 'Unusual'; Says 'Will Respond Soon'

The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology took to India's micro-blogging site Koo and called Twitter recent blog 'unusual'.

New Delhi: The IT Ministry took to Koo - India's rival to Twitter - and called the blog 'unusual' considering Twitter sought a meeting, the government added it would share its response soon.

"Upon the request of Twitter seeking a meeting with the Govt., the Secretary IT was to engage with senior management of Twitter. In this light a blog post published prior to this engagement is unusual. Govt. will share its response soon," the IT ministry wrote on KOO.

In the blog post Twitter noted it does not believe that the actions it has been directed to take by the IT Ministry are consistent with the Indian law.

"In keeping with our principles of defending protected speech and freedom of expression, we have not taken any action on accounts that consist of news media entities, journalists, activists, and politicians. "To do so, we believe, would violate their fundamental right to free expression under Indian law," the micro-blogging platform reiterated. In the aftermath of the farmer’s protests and social media reactions, people expressed their agitation over the issue. The micro-blogging site has finally come out openly sharing its stand on the matter. The micro-blogging site said it prioritised labeling of Tweets that were in violation of its synthetic and manipulated media policy. The detailed statement came after reports of growing tussle between the Centre and Twitter after the social media platform has been accused of sitting on the government's order for a day when the Centre asked it to block over 250 handles.

Due to the current row, many ministries started setting up accounts on Koo, including Ministry of Electronics and IT which later asked followers on Twitter to follow the Ministry on Koo.
