West Bengal: Unique Sheep Protest Outside Raj Bhavan, Governor Seeks Explanation From Police

The Governor’s outburst came as scores of Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers and supporters gathered outside the Raj Bhawan.

Kolkata: Taking serious note of the demonstrations in front of the Raj Bhawan following the arrests made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the 2016 Narada sting operation case, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar has shot off a letter to Kolkata Police Commissioner Soumen Mitra and sought an explanation.

“State of law and order @MamataOfficial even at the main entry gate of Raj Bhawan worrisome with stance police @KolkataPolice leaving all to be desired. And all this when the area is subject to 144 CrPC prohibitory orders. Constrained to seek an update on it,” he tweeted attaching the letter written to the Police Commissioner.

Dhankar also expressed his ire over an incident during the protests in which a man herded a flock of sheep at the gates of the Raj Bhawan.

“And on this stance @KolkataPolice (laughable one) is that the man was keen to have photo with Raj Bhawan background. No action whatsoever taken,” he tweeted.

The Governor also shared a video wherein a man was shouting and creating ruckus outside the Raj Bhawan during the protests.

“And such threatening posture at main gate of Raj Bhawan ! Police @KolkataPolice virtually takes no note of it. Look at the content of the threat ! With no fear of law- understandably given inaction of police. Can all this @MamataOfficial be countenanced or overlooked!” he said in a series of tweets tagging West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Kolkata Police.

The Governor’s outburst came as scores of Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers and supporters gathered outside the Raj Bhawan earlier on Monday and protested against the arrest of West Bengal ministers Subrata Mukherjee and Firhad Hakim, party MLA Madan Mitra and former Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee in connection with the Narada case.

The TMC supporters, who demanded immediate release of the four arrested, also raised slogans against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre and the Governor.
