Bengal: Police Fire Tear Gas Shells, Lathi-Charge Against Unrest Over Alleged Rape, Murder Of Minor

Police fired tear gas shells and used lathi charges on protesters today in Kaliyaganj, North Dinajpur, West Bengal, over the alleged rape and murder of a girl.

Kaliagunj in West Bengal's North Dinajpur district became a battleground on Friday (April 21) following the alleged rape and murder of a teenage girl in the area. The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has taken note of the incident in Uttar Dinajpur, and a fact-finding team will be dispatched to conduct an investigation.

"The NCPCR has taken note of reports of gang rape and murder of a Dalit girl child in...West Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur district," NCPCR Chairperson Priyank Kanoongo tweeted that a fact-finding team will be visiting there to conduct an investigation.

"We have received the info about the alleged rape and murder of a girl in Kaliyaganj in North Dinajpur and we are going to investigate it. It is very saddening that we informed about this incident to the chief secretary of the state govt and the collector of North Dinajpur in the afternoon, but we have not received any reply yet. We are trying for justice for the girl," NCPCR Chairperson was quoted as saying by ANI.

Tyres were burned and stones were thrown as residents protested the death of a teenage girl who had gone missing on Thursday evening. When police attempted to recover the body, an enraged mob clashed with them, and the RAF was called in to bring the situation under control.

According to media reports, the girl was raped and murdered after going missing last evening. Her body was discovered in a body of water near her home on Friday morning. Locals expressed their displeasure and protested when police arrived to retrieve her body. When police attempted to disperse the protesting mob and recover the body, they pelted stones and vandalised the area.

Locals demanded that the body be released only after the accused was apprehended, Economic Times reported citing local sources. Following this, people engaged in handcuffing with police and police lathicharge, and the RAF was called in. The girl lived in Kaligunj's Malgunj Panchayat area. Suvendu Adhikari, the state assembly's Leader of Opposition (LoP), claimed to be from the tribal Rahbonshi community, but this could not be verified.
