West Bengal Legislative Assembly's Budget Session To Begin On February 8

West Bengal Legislative Assembly's Budget session will begin on February 8 and the state budget will be presented on February 15.

West Bengal Legislative Assembly session will begin on February 8 and the State Budget will be presented on 15th February, reported news agency ANI. All eyes are on the state budget as West Bengal's upcoming panchayat elections inch closer. The opposition attacked the Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration over a number of issues, including teacher recruitment scam and cattle smuggling, during the state assembly's winter session.

During the last assembly session, there were a number of developments that garnered attention. Seven important Bills were tabled during the last session including a Bill to replace then-Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the chancellor of state-run universities. This bill was passed however Dhankhar returned the bill making CM Mamata Banerjee the chancellor of state universities on the ground of "incompleteness of compliance".

A resolution was passed that supported an ad hoc committee report favouring the creation of a legislative council amid opposition by the BJP.

Partha Chatterjee, the state's minister of parliamentary affairs, moved the resolution in accordance with Rule 169 of the House's rules for conducting business, which calls for consideration of the report of the ad hoc committee in order to examine the recommendation for the formation of a legislative council.

The BJP legislature party opposed the motion, claiming that it was an attempt at "backdoor politics" to enable party officials get seats in the legislature despite losing the assembly elections. Additionally, the saffron party said that the action would put strain on the state exchequer.

During that session, Mamata Banerjee also announced the creation of the bicycle hub in an administrative meeting in Paschim Medinipur.
