Ideas of India 2025: Aamir Khan has changed industry standards over the last thirty-seven years. The megastar, who will turn sixty next month, spoke about his successes, failures, actor fee, 'Loveyapa' and the tag of 'perfectionist' at ABP Network's Ideas of India Summit 2025. In the session titled '60 and Not Done: The Screen and Spotlight' chaired by Dibag and Chitra Tripathi, Aamir Khan spoke in-depth about his journey so far in Bollywood.
When Aamir Khan was asked about how he has managed to experiment with his roles in an expensive medium such as the film, when many stars have chosen to maintain a particular image, the actor shared an interesting detail involving his fee.
Aamir Khan’s fee per film
Aamir told Chitra Tripathi that he does not charge an actor's fee for his films. "Pichle 20-1 sal se mai fee nahi leta film karne ki. Toh agar apko film pasand aati hai to main kamata huin, aur agar nahi, to mai bhi nahi kamata( From the last 20 years, I have stopped taking film fees as an actor. I only earn if the film does well)."
Sharing the unit economics and the cost of production per film, Aamir admitted that he generally wishes for a film to make atleast Rs. 20-30 cr to be able to recover its cost of production. If the production is mounted on Rs. 200 cr, and the star charges a particular amount, and the film flops, how do you recover the COP of it.
Aamir also pointed out that this has been one of the oldest practices of earning money for his performance and is widely followed in Europe even today. "Main oldest tareeka kamani ka follow krat huin, isliye mujhe boht freedom hai, to main experiment kar pata hun,( I follow the oldest method of earning that any performing artist can. This is still practised in Europe widely)" The 'Laal Singh Chadhha' actor added how this no-fee helps him tackle diffuclt subject matters in his films.
