When the megastar was asked about his production 'Laapataa Ladies' not making the cut to Oscars, Aamir shared that the competition in the Best Foreign Film category was the most difficult

Ideas of India 2025: Aamir Khan is perhaps the only Bollywood actor to have two of his films 'Lagaan' and 'Laapataa Ladies' in the Oscar row over the years. The megastar recently sat down for interaction with ABP Network Ideas of India 2025 Summit to speak about his thirty-seven years in the film industry, his journey amid failures and successes and the fandom that has followed.
Aamir Khan on Laapataa Ladies
When the megastar was asked about his production 'Laapataa Ladies' not making the cut to Oscars, Aamir shared that the competition in the Best Foreign Film category was the most difficult as all countries send their very best films. So it is quite a possibility that "other films may be better than this, or that some members liked the other films more," Aamir however added, "This does not mean that our film is bad or less in any way but the competition in the foreign film category is more intense than the regular Academy category."
Aamir also cited an example by asking people to compare 'Mother India' and 'Mughal-e-Azam' and tell which is a better film. Saying that in a subjective medium like film, it is impossible to judge, such things can often happen.
However, Aamir jokingly concluded, "Main itna seriously nahi leta awards( I don't take awards seriously)."
About Laapata Ladies
Directed by Aamir Khan’s ex-wife and filmmaker Kiran Rao, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ was a small film backed by his production house, involving most newcomers. The film released on Netflix to wide acclaim and became 2024’s favoruite among critics and many an audience. However, there was a section of the audience disappointed with the film’s official entry to Oscars from India as opposed to the Cannes winning film ‘All We Imagine As Light’.
