Weather Updates: Conditions Not Favourable For Advance Of Monsoon In Delhi, Northwest India, Says IMD

The India Meteorological Department said that the conditions are not favourable for the progress of monsoon towards Rajasthan, some parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi.

New Delhi: Conditions are not favourable for the advance of monsoon towards Rajasthan, parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi. This information came from the India Meteorological Department on Thursday.

However, it will make slow progress in the next two or three days in some parts of Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. The Northern Limit of Monsoon is passing through Diu, Surat, Nandurbar, Bhopal, Naugong, Hamirpur, Barabanki, Bareilly, Saharanpur, Ambala, and Amritsar.

The Effect Of Westerly Winds On Monsoon May Persist Till 23rd June - IMD

The IMD forecast said, "The effect of the westerly winds on the monsoon is likely to persist till 23rd June, and hence, the monsoon may not reach Rajasthan, parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi during this period."

The monsoon pattern will gradually strengthen between 26th and 30th June, reaching most parts of northwestern India during this time. The Meteorological Department had earlier predicted that the monsoon would reach Delhi 12 days in advance (by 15th June).

Monsoon normally reaches Delhi by 27th June and covers the entire country by 8th July. According to private forecasting agency Skymet Weather, last year the monsoon reached Delhi on 25th June and by 29th June, it had covered the entire country.

Delhi Likely To Get Monsoon Rains Around 27th June

Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather said that the westerly winds were preventing the monsoon from moving towards northwestern India for the last three or four days. He said, "These winds will continue in the next week, too. Therefore, it seems that Delhi will get monsoon rains only around 27th June."

The IMD said that Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Jharkhand may receive "moderate to heavy" rain accompanied by strong winds and lightning at many places on Thursday and Friday.

It said, "It can cause injury to people and animals and even put lives at risk." The Meteorological Department said that under the influence of the western disturbance, there is a possibility of heavy or very heavy rains at many places in Uttarakhand over the next two days.

Heavy Rain Forecast In Odisha In Next Two-Three Days - Meteorological Department

The Meteorological Department said, "A cyclonic circulation is persisting in the Ganges and adjoining areas of West Bengal. Under this effect, heavy to very heavy rains are expected in the next two or three days in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Odisha."

Rainfall less than 15 mm is considered light, 15 mm to 64.5 mm of rainfall is considered moderate, 64.5 to 115.5 mm is considered heavy, and 115.6 and 204.4 mm is considered very heavy. Rainfall above 204.4 mm is considered as extremely heavy rainfall.
