'He's A Corrupted Man': West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Hits At Guv Dhankhar As Govt 'Plans' To Demand His Removal

CM Mamata Banerjee and the state government have been engaged in a war of words with Dhankhar for quite some time over the law and order situation in the state.

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has once again spoken on the issue of demanding the resignation of state governor Jagdeep Dhankhar.

In a fresh response, she has accused him of being a corrupt official.

In a press conference on Monday, CM Mamata Banerjee announced the extension of Covid-19 restrictions in the state till July 15. There, she was also asked about the demand to remove Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post of state governor.

Responding to the question, she said: "A journalist told me the governor's name was in the chargesheet of the 1996 hawala Jain case. But they have gone to court and cleared it from the court, but again the PIL is there (has been filed) and it is pending there. What do you want to know more?"

"He's a corrupted man, I'm sorry to say. All corruption-oriented man. Why Central government has allowed a governor like this?" she questioned.

"If the Centre does not know about the hawala Jain case then I'd say take out the chargesheet. Was his name there or not. First, you managed the court and there was a court case again and there has been no decision taken in it," she added as she continued her scathing remarks against the governor.

'Your Governor has not been chargesheeted': Jagdeep Dhankhar

Responding to the statement, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has denied CM Mamata's allegations.

"Your Governor has not been chargesheeted. There is no such document. This is misinformation. I didn't expect this from a senior politician. I have not taken stay from any Court in hawala charge sheet because there was none," he said.

"Till date in Indian culture, no one has taken action against younger sister. I would not go that way. I am sad. Mamata Ji is a mature leader. Why did she do this?: he responded when asked if he will take legal action against Mamata Banerjee.

Ongoing Tussle Between West Bengal Govt & Governor

CM Mamata Banerjee and the state government have been engaged in a war of words with Dhankhar for quite some time over the law and order situation in the state.

When Dhankhar repeatedly accused that the state government of being quiet and inactive about deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal, CM Mamata had countered the Governor by saying that he was overstepping his constitutional limits and interfering in the state's functioning.

Recently, Trinamool MP Mohua Moitra had accused him of indulging in nepotism by giving appointments to several OSDs who are close to him.

According to sources, the ruling party is currently planning to formally demand Dhankhar's removal by pushing through a resolution, and discussions on the same are underway. Chief Minister Banerjee is reported to have discussed the issue with assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee as well.

The assembly session in the state will begin on July 2.
