Uttarakhand Disaster: Districts On River Ganga On High Alert; Rafting Stopped In Rishikesh

The districts where high alert has been issued include Pauri, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Haridwar and Dehradun. As per reports, rafting has also been stopped in Rishikesh as a precautionary measure.

Even as the rescue and relief operations in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, which is facing a major disaster after a glacier broke off at Joshimath, continue unabated, the state administration has put several districts likely to be affected on high alert.  

The districts where high alert has been issued include Pauri, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Haridwar and Dehradun. As per reports, rafting has also been stopped in Rishikesh as a precautionary measure.

The government has also appealed to the people not to venture near the Ganga river.

The Uttar Pradesh Government has also asked the authorities in all districts on the banks of river Ganga to be on high alert and continuously monitor the water level.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also assured Uttarakhand of all possible assistance to tackle the natural disaster.

“Feel saddened by the disaster which took place after a glacier broke in Uttarakhand. I pray to Lord Ram to give peace to the souls who have passed away, strength to the aggrieved family members to bear the loss and speedy recovery to the injured,” he said in a Tweet posted in Hindi.

Over 100 people are feared dead in the incident, which triggered an avalanche and massive flooding of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga, forcing the evacuation of thousands besides damaging the nearby power plants.
