'UT Admin Wants Me To Sign This Bond Even When…’: Sonam Wangchuk Tweets As Climate Fast For Ladakh Enters Day 3

Wangchuk is on a five-day fast demanding sixth schedule of the constitution and other safeguards for the Union Territory.

As Sonam Wangchuk's fast to protect the eco-sensitive Union Territory of Ladakh entered third day on Saturday, the environmentalist took to Twitter to write that the local administration has asked him to sign a bond, and urged the attention of lawyers across the world towards the issue. He also shared pictures of the agreement he is supposed to sign.

"CALLING LAWYERS OF THE WORLD!!! The #Ladakh UT administration wants me to sign this bond even when only fasts & prayers r happening. Pls advise How right is it, should I silence myself! I don't mind arrest at all," wrote Wangchuk on Twitter.

In another tweet, Wangchuk shared pictures of himself fasting outside the Himalayan Institute of Alternative Ladakh (HIAL) in Phyang covered in snow, and thanked the people for their support.

"Good morning world! Starting 3rd day of #ClimateFast outdoors, under heavy police presence... don't worry it's all for my 'safety' Thanks for all ur support," wrote the environmentalist.

Wangchuk is on a five-day fast demanding sixth schedule of the constitution and other safeguards for the region. He has also urged people to change their carbon intensive lifestyle in order to fight climate change.

Speaking to news agency ANI on Friday, the environmentalist said that if measure are not taken to provide protection from the industries, the glaciers in the region will become extinct.

"If measures are not taken, the industries, tourism, and commerce will continue to flourish in Ladakh and will eventually finish it. Recent studies from Kashmir University and other research organizations have concluded that glaciers in Leh-Ladakh will finish nearly to its 2/3rd if they are not properly taken care of. A study by Kashmir Univesity has found that the glaciers surrounded by highways and human activities are melting at a comparatively faster rate," said Wangchuk speaking to the news agency.

Wangchuk had shared a video titled 'Ladakh ki Mann ki Baat,' on Friday in which he said that he was not allowed to travel to Khardungla pass-- around 17852 feet above sea level-- to protest along with his supporters by the local administration.

In the video he also urged Prime Miniter Narendra Modi to intervene and safeguard the ecosystem under the sixth schedule of the Indian constitution.
