Mukhtar Ansari awarded 10 years imprisonment in gangster act case

Gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari has been awarded 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5 lakh by Ghazipur MP-MLA court. The sentence is in connection with the murder of police officer Kapil Dev Singh under Karanda police station limits of Uttar Pradesh's Gazhipur district in 2009 and in the 2010 attempt to murder case of another policeman Mir Hasan. His associate Soni Yadav has also been sentenced to 5 years in prison and fined Rs 2 lakh by the court.

"A case was registered against Mukhtar Ansari and his aide Sonu Yadav in 2010. In connection with that case, both the accused were pronounced guilty yesterday and today arguments on the quantum of the sentence were held...The court sentenced Mukhtar Ansari to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5 Lakhs on him. Sonu Yadav was sentenced to 5 years of rigorous imprisonment with the imposition of a fine of Rs 2 Lakhs...," said Ghazipur additional district government counsel (criminal) Neeraj Srivastava, according to news agency ANI.

The court has fixed October 27 as the date for pronouncing the sentence, the government counsel further said.

After the murder of Kapil Dev Singh and attempt to murder of Mir Hasan, a case was registered against Mukhtar Ansari in 2010.

Ansari, who is a five-time former MLA is currently lodged in the Banda district jail. This is his 6th conviction of the gangster turned politician in the last 13 months.

In June this year, a Varanasi MP-MLA court sentenced Mukhtar Ansari to life imprisonment and a fine of Rupees 1 lakh in the 1991 Awadhesh Rai murder case. 

Awadhesh Rai, a Congress leader and brother of former MLA Ajay Rai was shot dead outside Ajay Rai's residence on August 3, 1991, in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi.
