UP CM-Designate Yogi Adityanath Resigns As MLC, Akhilesh Leaves LS Seat To Fight BJP On Home Turf

BJP's CM designate Yogi Adityanath tendered resignation as MLC and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav quit his Lok Sabha seat from Azamgarh.

Lucknow: Ahead of the much-awaited government formation after Bharatiya Janata Party's stunning return in Uttar Pradesh in Assembly elections, Chief Minister-designate Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday tendered his resignation from the membership of the state legislative council.

According to reports, Adityanath sent his resignation letter to Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council chairman Kunwar Manvendra Singh on Monday evening which was accepted earlier in the day, news agency PTI quoted the Council Secretariat as saying.

The BJP leader was elected as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) in Uttar Pradesh in 2017after he became the Chief Minister of the populous states. His term as MLC was till July 6, 2022.

Adityanath tendered his resignation before his term as MLC as he won the Gorakhpur Urban seat in 2022 Assembly Elections and led his party to a thumping victory in Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier Adityanath had represented the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat.

The priest-turned-politician is all set to be sworn in as the chief minister for the second term on March 25.

SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav Resigns From Azamgarh Seat

Even the Samajwadi Party (SP) chief and former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav submitted his resignation from the Azamgarh parliamentary constituency to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Akhilesh had won the Karhal assembly seat in the recently-held assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh.

It is being said that Akhilesh's decision to quit his Lok Sabha seat is a clear indication that SP will now launch a full-fledged political offensive against the BJP on its home turf.

Additionally, SP MP Azam Khan, who is currently lodged in jail, has also resigned from his Rampur Lok Sabha seat.

Khan contested Assembly election from Rampur from Sitapur jail. About 100 cases are registered against him in different police stations of Rampur district, some of which are pending in court.
