Union MoS Shantanu Thakur Claims Receiving Threat Letter From LeT Against CAA Implementation In Bengal

Union Minister and BJP leader Shantanu Thakur claimed that the alleged threat letter, written in Bengali, warned of "burning the entire country" if the NRC is enforced in the state.

Union Minister and BJP leader Shantanu Thakur reported receiving a letter on Monday purportedly from the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), threatening dire consequences if the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is implemented in West Bengal. The letter, written in Bengali, warned of "burning the entire country" if the NRC is enforced in the state. Additionally, it threatened to destroy the 'Thakurbari', a pilgrimage site of the Matua community, should Muslims face mistreatment following the implementation of the NRC, according to news agency PTI.

Expressing his shock at receiving the letter, Thakur, who serves as the Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, stated that he had informed his department about the matter. He further mentioned his intention to notify the Prime Minister, the Home Ministry, and to file a case regarding the threat, PTI's report stated.

"I am shocked to receive this letter. I have informed my department. I will also inform the PM, the home ministry and lodge a case in this connection," he told reporters, as quoted by the report.

Thakur also raised questions for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who holds the position of the state's home minister, asking if she had any prior knowledge of the LeT sending such a communication.

As per PTI, when contacted, Bongaon Police District Superintendent Dinesh Kumar stated that they had not yet received any formal complaint from the minister regarding the threatening letter. The signatories of the letter, as mentioned in a copy available with PTI, claimed to be members of the LeT operating in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
