Union Cabinet Approves Setting Up Of G20 Secretariat For India's Presidency

From December 1 to November 30, 2023, India will preside over the G20. The G20 meeting will be held in India next year.

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet authorised the setting up of a G20 secretariat on Tuesday in order to put in place the necessary measures for India's leadership of the coveted grouping.

From December 1 to November 30, 2023, India will preside over the G20. The G20 meeting will be held in India next year, news agency PTI reported.

"The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today approved the setting up of a G20 Secretariat and its reporting structures, which will be responsible for the implementation of overall policy decisions and arrangements needed for steering India's forthcoming G20 Presidency," the government said in a statement.

The G20 is the preeminent platform for international economic cooperation, with a significant role in global economic governance.

"As per practice, a G20 Secretariat is being established to handle work relating to substantive / knowledge/content, technical, media, security and logistical aspects of India's G20 Presidency," the statement reads.

"It will be manned by officers and staff from the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Finance, and other relevant line Ministries / Departments and domain knowledge experts," it further reads.

According to the government, the secretariat will remain operational until February 2024.

Italy had the G-20 leadership in 2021, and Indonesia will hold the position until November 2022. At the moment, the G20 troika consists of Italy, Indonesia, and India.
