Twitter 'Prima Facie' In Compliance With New IT Rules, All Officials Appointed: Centre Tells Delhi HC

Last week, the Twitter Inc told Delhi Court that it has appointed permanent Chief Compliance Officer, Resident Grievance Officer and Nodal contact person in compliance with provisions of new IT rules.

New Delhi: The Central government on Tuesday told the Delhi High Court that US-based microblogging site Twitter has appointed Chief Compliance Officer, Resident Grievance Officer and Nodal Contact Person and is prima facie in compliance with the new Information Technology (IT) Rules.

Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, appearing for Centre, told the court that, "Prima facie, Twitter has appointed Chief Compliance Officer, Resident Grievance Officer and Nodal Contact Person in compliance with recently amended IT Rules."

Senior Advocate Sajan Poovayya, appearing for Twitter informed the court that the social media company has appointed permanent officers which will report directly to the US office. He also apprised the Court as Twitter did not have any office in India therefore contingent officers were appointed earlier by the company, reported news agency ANI.

While ASG Chetan Sharma has sought time to file an affidavit in this regard, the court has adjourned the matter for October 5.

Last week, the Twitter Inc had told the Delhi High Court that it has appointed permanent Chief Compliance Officer, Resident Grievance Officer and Nodal contact person in compliance with certain provisions of the new IT rules. It informed that Vinay Prakash has been appointed for the post of Chief Compliance Officer and Shahin Komath as Nodal Contact Person.

Earlier, Delhi High Court had pulled up Twitter for appointing a contingent worker as CCO and said that the social media platform was in non-compliance with the new IT Rules. Centre had also claimed that Twitter was acting in abject non-compliance of the rules. The court also granted time to Twitter to file an affidavit to show compliance with the IT Rules.
