Tripura MLA Writes To DGP To Declare Some Wards ‘Vulnerable’ Ahead Of Civic Elections In Agartala
Barman asked the DGP to declare some wards of the Agartala Municipal Corporation as vulnerable and hyper sensitive ahead of Civic elections scheduled to be held on November 25.
New Delhi: Member of Legislative Assembly from Agartala, Sudip Roy Barman has written a letter to the DGP of the Tripura Police ahead of the civic elections, reported ANI. In the letter, Barman asked the DGP to declare some wards of the Agartala Municipal Corporation as vulnerable and hyper sensitive. Civic elections for Agartala Municipal Corporation is scheduled to be held on November 25.
In his letter, Burman has further written that a “reign of terror” is prevalent in the state. He gave instance of a candidate from one of the wards stating that the candidate is openly threatening voters of the minority muslim community not to turn up for polling else they will have to face consequences.
“Miscreants and criminals are having a merry go round and taking law in their own hands where the police succumbs under pressure,” wrote the MLA in his letter.

On October 26 Tripura witnessed violence during a rally by Vishwa Hindu Parishad protesting against minority attacks in neighbouring Bangladesh. A mosque was vandalized in north Tripura region of Chamtila. Three houses and a few shops, reportedly belonging to Muslims were also plundered in Rowa Bazar in Tripura.
After the incident, a team of lawyers visited Tripura after which the Tripura Police booked four Supreme Court lawyers under UAPA for their social media posts. The police claimed that the social media posts uploaded by the lawyers claimed that Muslim communiyt, including women, were targetted in the violence and a mosque was vandalised.
Following the incidents of violence, the Tripura Police also booked over 102 people under the stringent UAPA. All the 102 people were booked for their social media posts regarding the Tripura violence. The Police also sent notices to Twitter and Facebook to freeze accounts of these social media users.
