Telangana, Andhra Pradesh Floods: Incessant Rainfall Kills Over 30, PM Modi Assures All Help From Centre

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he has spoken to the chief ministers of both states and assured all possible help from the central government.

Hyderabad: Hours after the unprecedented torrential rain wreaked havoc in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday spoke to chief minister of the two southern states and assured them of all possible support in rescue and relief work by the Centre. Three other people have died due to a building collapse incident in Telangana's Nagarkurnool district. Even in the neighbouring Telangana, the death toll now stands at 10 as heavy downpour continue to paralyzing normal life in the state. PM Modi said he has spoken to Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and assured all possible help from the central government. Even Home Minister Amit Shah took to Twitter and said that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is closely monitoring the situation in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in the wake of heavy rainfalls. Heavy rains continued to pound the state, causing damage to roads and disrupting power supply in several places in Andhra Pradesh. For the second time in less than 20 days, river Krishna remained swollen on Wednesday as it received a heavy flood due to rainfall over the last couple of days. The second warning signal has been raised at Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada as over 6.46 lakh cusecs of discharge was witnessed, posing a threat to the habitations along its left and right banks. Reddy held a high-level meeting here and reviewed the situation. Tandava, Raivada, Meghadrigadda projects in the district received heavy inflows and the flood was being discharged into the Bay of Bengal. The flood impact was felt in Chodavaram, Payakaraopeta, Yalamanchili and Anakapalli mandals in the district. Police teams and personnel of Disaster Response Force (DRF) of GHMC and NDRF evacuated several families from different localities that were flooded, even as rescue efforts were on in many other areas. In its weather forecast, the Met department said thunderstorm accompanied by lightning is very likely to occur at isolated places over Telangana on Wednesday. Heavy to very heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places including Hyderabad on Wednesday and Thursday.
