IMD Issues Rain Alerts Across Tamil Nadu Till June 16; Orange Alert For Southern & Ghat Districts
Tamil Nadu is set to face intensified rains as IMD has issued yellow alerts for many districts (June 10-16) and orange alerts (June 13-16) for southern/Ghat regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive rainfall alert across Tamil Nadu, warning of intensified monsoon activity from June 10 to June 16, 2025. On June 10, the IMD forecast thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate rain for isolated areas in Chennai. However, despite the onset of rains, high temperatures and humidity are likely to cause discomfort in certain areas across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The maximum temperature on Monday reached 39.4°C in Thoothukudi, while Salem recorded the lowest minimum at 22.4°C.
In the next five days, a yellow alert is in effect for many districts throughout the week, while parts of the state will come under an orange alert from June 13 to 16, signalling the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly in southern and Ghat regions.
According to IMD, the heightened rainfall is due to the development of an atmospheric circulation system, which is enhancing the southwest monsoon’s advance into Tamil Nadu. This is expected to bring widespread showers across the state during the forecast period.
