Over 10 Petitions Filed Against Waqf Act, To Be Heard By CJI-Led SC Bench On April 16
More than 10 petitions have challenged the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, in the Supreme Court, which will hear the matter on April 16, with the Centre also filing a caveat.

After over 10 petitions reached the Supreme Court challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. A three-judge Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna will sit on April 16 to hear these petitions.
As per the PTI report, Justices Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan are also part of the bench for hearing the pleas. On Tuesday, the Centre filed a caveat in the apex court and sought a hearing before any order was passed in the matter.
The DMK, Congress MPs Imran Pratapgarhi and Mohammad Jawed, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, RJD MPs Manoj Jha and Faiyaz Ahmad, and AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan have approached the apex court against the Act. The central government on Tuesday notified the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, which was passed by Parliament last week.
A caveat is a legal notice filed by a party in the High Courts or the Supreme Court to ensure that no order is passed in a case without first giving them an opportunity to be heard.
Meanwhile, intervention applications were filed in the Supreme Court in support of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, saying the amendments are in consonance with the scheme of the Constitution of India, on Thursday.
An intervention application is a request to participate in a legal case or proceeding, according to ANI.

The applications were filed by Satish Kumar Aggarwal, a member of Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha and Vishnu Gupta, National President of NGO Hindu Sena while opposing the petitions challenging Waqf (Amendment) Act.
President Droupadi Murmu on April 5 gave her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which was earlier passed by Parliament after heated debates in both Houses.
On Wednesday, the National Conference moved the Supreme Court with a writ petition against the Waqf Amendment Act "as soon as possible", party's chief spokesperson and legislator Tanvir Sadiq. Referring to the past three days of disruption in the J&K House, Sadiq said they wanted to convey to the rest of the country that the ruling alliance in J&K is not in favour of the Waqf Amendment Act, and they are thankful to the speaker for keeping the “sense of the House” on record.
