Supreme Court To Hear Petitions Against UP Demolition Drive Tomorrow

The application has sought directions to initiate action against the officials responsible for the houses demolished in violation of the law made by the Uttar Pradesh government and municipal laws.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear the petition filed by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind to stop the ongoing bulldozer action by the administration in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. A bench of Justice AS Bopanna and Justice Vikram Nath will hear the issue. Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has approached the apex court against the bulldozer action. The petition has sought directions not to demolish the houses without due process of law. Strict action has also been demanded against officials indulging in unlawful demolition.

It has been said in the application that the UP government should be directed not to do any further demolition without following the due process of law. The application has sought directions to initiate action against the officials responsible for the houses demolished in violation of the law made by the Uttar Pradesh government and municipal laws.

According to the Jamiat, the present situation is even more worrying as the Supreme Court had already ordered a stay on the demolition being carried out in North West Delhi under similar circumstances as a punitive measure.

On Sunday, the District Development Authority demolished the house of Welfare Party of India leader Javed Mohammad in Prayagraj. It is said that parts of the building were constructed illegally and he did not appear for a hearing on the issue in May. However, their lawyers said the family only got a copy of the notice late on Friday night, two days before the demolition. In which it was said that the building was owned by his wife and not by him.

A day earlier, a multi-storey building owned by a close aide of Nizam Qureshi, the alleged mastermind of the June 3 violence in Kanpur, was demolished.
