Amid Global Market Crash, Congress Quips Modi, Trump: 'Both Experts In...'

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh criticized PM Modi and President Trump for global market meltdown due to tariffs.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh on Monday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump amid a global market meltdown following US slapping tariffs on various countries.

Asian stock indices including India's Nifty and Sensex saw bloodbath on opening crashing between 5 to 9 per cent.

"It is no wonder that Mr. Modi and Mr. Trump describe themselves as good friends," said the Congress MP in a post on X.

Referring to PM Modi's demonitsation move in 2016 and Trump's tariff move earlier this month, Ramesh said: "Both are experts in giving their economies self-inflicted wounds."

"Markets are reacting predictably in a tariffying manner," he added.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate also reacted to market crash saying, "The stock market - is a sea of red."

'India Need Not Worry...'

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi launched an all-out attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party over the market crash. Taking a dig at the saffron party, the Rajya Sabha MP said the government prioritised passing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in a "marathon late-night session" when Trump rolled out the tariffs.

"The global markets are crashing. So is the Indian market. But India need not worry, after all the government passed the Waqf Amendment bill in a marathon late night session in parliament on the day Trump tariffs were rolled out & it did not even utter the word tariff and its impact.
Shut your eyes to reality and chant sab changa si," she said in a post on X.

In another post, she further mocked BJP saying, "Okay hai. Bulldozer hi toh chal raha hai market par, Bhajapa ka favourite weapon. (The markets are being bulldozed but it's fine since it is BJP's favourite weapon.)"
