Search For Amritpal Singh Enters Day 5, Cops Keep Close Watch On India-Nepal Border

The police action came weeks after Amritpal Singh and his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station near Amritsar to secure the release of an arrested associate.

New Delhi: In efforts to nab pro-Khalistan "Waris Punjab De" chief Amritpal Singh and his associates, the Uttarakhand Police on Tuesday conducted a search operation at gurdwaras, hotels, and in areas on the Indo-Nepal border in Udham Singh Nagar after the Punjab Police launched a crackdown against them, news agency PTI reported.

City Superintendent of Police Manoj Katyal said that the police kept searching for these criminals across the district.

Following information from their Punjab counterparts that Singh and his associates were trying to flee the country, the police launched a search operation in Uttarakhand, Katyal said.

Intelligence agencies are also monitoring the situation. A close vigil is being kept on the India-Nepal border so that he does not escape to Nepal through here, the police added, according to PTI.

Punjab Police on Tuesday released a few pictures of the Khalistani leader in different attires and requested people to help them in his arrest.

Sukhchain Singh Gill, Punjab Inspector General of Police (Headquarters), said that a total of 154 people have been arrested and taken into custody so far as a result of the crackdown on members of the Waris Punjab De organisation.

The radical leader's uncle Harjit Singh uncle was flown to Assam on Tuesday. On Sunday, his other four arrested associates were also taken to Dibrugarh Central jail.

The Punjab Police launched a high-level operation on Saturday to chase Amritpal Singh while he was reportedly on his way to Shri Muktsar Sahib. Six of his aides were arrested while Singh managed to flee. Police cordoned off Amritpal's cavalcade in Mehatpur in a bid to arrest him. However, Amritpal switched his vehicle at the spot where his cavalcade was intercepted and managed to dodge the police.

The police action came almost over three weeks after Amritpal Singh and his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station near Amritsar to secure the release of an arrested associate.
