It is suspected that the three labourers died due to asphyxiation while working in the septic tank.

New Delhi: Three sanitation workers lost their lives in Pune on Friday morning while cleaning a septic tank of a housing society, according to an ANI report. It is suspected that the labourers died due to asphyxiation.

The officials of the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) said that the workers were cleaning the septic chamber of a private society manually in Pune's Wagholi area.

Fire brigade officials said that they were informed about the incident at 7 am and during rescue work they were able to retrieve the bodies of two workers, however, one was missing, later the body of the missing worker was found.

The official said that the residents informed that there was another worker, who was probably stuck inside, as per PTI. The official said that they also found three pairs of footwear outside the tank.

"People here are saying that there were a total of three workers. We also saw three pairs of footwear outside the tank, so a search is on for the third worker," the official said.

"The victims were working in an 18-feet deep drainage-cum-septic tank. It seems that they were suffocated and got stuck inside. We were informed about it around 7 am and after reaching the spot, we took the bodies of two workers out," an official from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority's fire brigade department was quoted as saying.
