Ramjas row: It's not right to create controversy over Gurmehar Kaur, says Kiren Rijiju
New Delhi: Kiren Rijiju, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, on Tuesday, said that it's inappropriate to create controversy over Gurmehar Kaur.
"She (Gurmehar Kaur) is a young girl, creating controversy over her isn't right. Its about leftists who celebrate when our jawans die," said Rijiju who is considered the face of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in North East India.
"During war between India and China they (left) supported China; they mislead the youth and it is not right", MoS Home, Kiren Rijiju added.
Meanwhile Kanwaljeet Singh, Gurmehar's grandfather said-"She is just a young girl, lost her father to Kargil war. Don't they (politicians) see a daughter in her? Drama being created, shouldn't be highlighted. Politicians must refrain from giving statements."
Kaur, daughter of Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, had started the campaign "I am not afraid of ABVP" following violence at Ramjas college.
Kaur had last week changed her Facebook profile picture into one holding a placard reading, "I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #StudentsAgainstABVP."
However, former cricketer Virendra Sehwag, Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda and wrestler yogeshwar dutt criticised the literature student's remarks, calling her a "political pawn".
Responding to the critics, Kaur said they do not understand her "idea of patriotism".
Ramjas college had last week witnessed large-scale violence between members of the AISA and the ABVP. The genesis of the clash was an invite to JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid to address a seminar on 'Culture of Protests', which was withdrawn by the college authorities following
opposition by ABVP.
Meanwhile, amid rape threat, Kaur has left Delhi for her home state Punjab.
