PM Modi, Rahul Pay Tribute To Rajiv Gandhi On His Death Anniversary

On the death anniversary of Ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, along with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and several other senior Congress leaders, visited Veer Bhumi to offer floral tributes.

On the 34th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, leaders from across the political spectrum came together on Wednesday to pay homage to the late leader, acknowledging his contributions to India's development and remembering his legacy. Earlier, Rahul Gandhi, along with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and several other senior Congress leaders, visited Veer Bhumi—the memorial site of Rajiv Gandhi in the national capital—to offer floral tributes.

Leaders Express Tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his respects in a brief statement, saying, "On his death anniversary today, I pay my tributes to our former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji."

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi shared an emotional message, remembering his father and pledging to carry forward his vision. "Papa, your memories guide me at every step. My resolution is to make your unfulfilled dreams come true - and I will definitely fulfill them," he wrote.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also paid her respects, saying, "Fondly remembering Late Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, on his death anniversary today.  Rajivji was a visionary and a martyr for the cause of India."

Rajiv Gandhi's Legacy

Rajiv Gandhi entered national politics following the assassination of his mother and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984. He assumed office as India’s youngest Prime Minister at the age of 40 and led the nation until 1989, as per a report on ANI. His tenure was marked by efforts to modernise India's communication and technology infrastructure, as well as key reforms in education and governance.

Born on August 20, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi’s life was tragically cut short when he was assassinated by an LTTE suicide bomber during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, on May 21, 1991. His death marked a turning point in Indian politics and remains one of the most significant events in the country’s recent history.
