Raigad Building Collapse: Ragpickers Chase For Gold In Debris; Cops Deployed To Overlook Safety Of Valuables

Navi Mumbai:  Even as the Raigad building collapsed amid heavy monsoon leaving the residents on tenterhook, ragpickers and locals are now digging for valuables like gold at the site where the debris from the building collapse has been dumped. Now, locals have gathered to rummage through the debris in the hope of valuables at the location since one of the families residing in Tarique Garden claimed to have lost 120 grams of gold jewellery while another rued about the fact that 100 grams of ornaments and Rs 22,000 cash is missing. Located in the Kajalpura area, the Tarique Garden residential building - with 21 flats in A-Wing and 20 in B-Wing - had a total of 97 residents, suddenly came crashing last week in Mahad town, some 170 km south of Mumbai. Meanwhile, district authorities managed to recover a measly amount of the gold from the debris at the time of rescue and cleaning operations. In order to track the retrieved items and to ensure that the valuable reaches to its rightful owners, the Raigad police formed a committee of residents, as per the report in Times of India. As per the report, ragpickers and locals are now hunting for the valuables once the news broke. In fact the recovery of the valuable has caught so much attention that a police constable is also posted at the site to ensure the safety of the valuables However, the amount of jewellery recovered so far is negligible and has been given back to the rightful owners after due inquiry. And the rest of it will be enquired by the committee of residents formed, which will check the items and hand them over to owners.
