'2 Cylinders Then For Price Of 1 Now': Rahul Gandhi Hits Out At Modi Govt Over LPG Price Hike

In 2014, when the Congress was in power, the LPG gas price was Rs410 and a subsidy was Rs827. However, under the BJP's regime, the LPG price has surged to Rs999 with zero-subsidy, tweeted Gandhi

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday hit out at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union government over the rising cooking gas prices, while emphasising that only Congress governs for the welfare of poor and middle-class Indian families.

The Congress leader took to Twitter and targetted the Bharatiya Janata Party over the state of the economy while comparing the data of LPG gas rates of 2014 with the current cylinder's price.

The Lok Sabha MP tweeted, "2 cylinders then for the price of 1 now". According to Gandhi's tweet, in 2014, when Congress was in power, the LPG gas price was Rs 410 and subsidy was Rs 827. However, under the BJP's regime, the LPG price has surged to Rs 999 with zero subsidy.

"Only Congress governs for the welfare of poor and middle-class Indian families. It’s the core of our economic policy,"  Gandhi added on Twitter.

The Centre on Saturday raised the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by Rs 50 per cylinder, the second increase in rates in just over six weeks following the surging international energy rates. With the latest revision, a domestic cylinder of 14.2 kg will now cost Rs 999.50, according to news agency ANI.

The hike in price comes at a time when the entire country is struggling with an increase in petrol and diesel prices. And the new price of the domestic LPG cylinders will only add to the burden.

Earlier this month, the government had raised the price of commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 105. A 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder in the national capital now costs Rs 2,355.5. The price of a 5-kg LPG commercial cylinder was also increased, which costs Rs 655.

In April too, the rate of commercial cooking gas was increased by Rs 250 per cylinder to Rs 2,253.

Prices of petroleum products like diesel, LPG, and petrol have been on a constant rise for the last few months. According to experts, crude oil prices in the international market have increased due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, forcing the government to take such measures.
