Prophet Remark Row: Over 200 Arrested In Bengal. Kolkata Police Summon Nupur Sharma

On Sunday, sporadic incidents of violence and protests were reported in West Bengal’s Nadia district where people attacked and damaged a local train at Bethuadahari railway station

New Delhi: Over 200 persons have been arrested from various parts of West Bengal in connection with the violence that erupted over controversial remarks on the Prophet Mohammad by now-sacked BJP functionaries, said DGP Manoj Malaviya on Monday, reported news agency PTI.

42 cases have been lodged in the matter along with 200 arrests, he said, adding that the situation in violence-hit parts of the state now is under control, reported the news agency.

So far, the situation is under control, Malaviya told reporters at the West Bengal Police Headquarters in Kolkata.

Protests against remarks on Prophet Mohammad by two suspended BJP functionaries had turned violent in a few districts of the state, including Howrah and Murshidabad, with the administration suspending internet services and restricting movement of people.

On Sunday, sporadic incidents of violence and protests were reported in West Bengal’s Nadia district where people attacked and damaged a local train at Bethuadahari railway station even as prohibitory orders continued in parts of Howrah and Murshidabad districts.

Kolkata Police Summons Nupur Sharma

Suspended spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party Nupur Sharma was summoned by the Kolkata police on Monday for questioning in connection with her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad, as per another report by the news agency.

She has been asked to appear at Narkeldanga Police Station on June 20 to record her statement, an official said.

Sharma made comments during a TV debate show which triggered violent protests in several parts of the country.

An FIR against Sharma, for her remarks, was also lodged by Trinamool Congress minority cell general secretary Abul Sohail at Contai police station
