Positive Development, Says AAP As Congress Backs Party On Delhi Ordinance Ahead Of Oppn Meet

AAP's Raghav Chadha on Sunday said that Congress has declared its unequivocal opposition to the Delhi ordinance. This comes days after the two parties witnessed arguments over Centre's ordinance.

Congress on Sunday finally declared its support against the Centre's ordinance over control of services in Delhi, days after CM Arvind Kejriwal sought the party to make its stance clear. AAP MP Raghav Chadha said that Congress has announced its unequivocal opposition to the Delhi Ordinance which is a 'positive development'. He made the remarks while reacting to a video of Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal who was speaking on the possibility of AAP joining Monday's second opposition meeting in Bengaluru. The Congress leader said that he thinks AAP will join and that on the Delhi ordinance, Congress's stand is very clear. "We are not going to support it," he said. This is the first time party has clearly stated its stance on the issue and it comes just a day before the opposition's mega meeting.

"I think they (AAP) are going to join the meeting tomorrow. As for the ordinance (on control of services in Delhi), our stand is very clear. We are not going to support it," Venugopal told PTI.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has been meeting opposition party leaders from the TMC, SP, CPI, JMM, and Shiv Sena (UBT), among others to gain support against the contentious ordinance. He also sought support from the Congress, which has remained silent on whether the Delhi ordinance should be supported or rejected.

Last week, CM Kejriwal stated that he is waiting for Congress to issue a statement condemning the Centre's Delhi Ordinance. The Grand Old Party assured Kejriwal the previous month at an Opposition meeting in Patna that a statement on the Ordinance would be issued well before the start of Parliament's Monsoon Session. Last Saturday, Kejriwal told the media that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had received the invitation to the Opposition meeting, but he was still waiting for the Congress' response on the Ordinance.

The government on Thursday listed 21 bills for the upcoming Monsoon Session of the Parliament, which begins July 20, including one on the contentious Delhi ordinance, personal data protection, and amending forest conservation laws.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Centre on the Delhi government's petition challenging the constitutionality of the ordinance on service control in the national capital, according to PTI. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud directed the Delhi government to revise its petition and include the Lieutenant Governor as a party in the case.
