'Delighted To Speak With My Dear Friend': PM Modi, US President Hold First Talks During Trump 2.0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President Donald Trump spoke on the phone over bilateral matters between the two democracies.

Within days after his inauguration and re-entry into the White House, US President Donald Trump held a phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The telephonic conversation was mainly organised to take stock of the bilateral ties even as both countries want to hold the Quad Summit at an “early date” along with Japan and Australia, official sources said.

PM Modi stated, "Delighted to speak with my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump @POTUS. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security."

US President Trump had earlier said that he would address two main irritants with India concerning the issues of illegal immigrants as well as high trade tariffs.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was in the US last week to attend Trump’s inauguration at the Capital Rotunda in Washington DC when he met the US President’s key men - Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.

Within hours of Trump’s inauguration, Washington also hosted the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in a significant signal to China. ALSO READ | US-India Trade Pact Will Enable Delhi To Counter China’s Economic Primacy, Former Envoy Juster Says

Modi and Trump's conversation comes exactly a week after the Prime Minister congratulated him on his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States

"Congratulations my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump on your historic inauguration as the 47th President of the United States! I look forward to working closely together once again, to benefit both our countries, and to shape a better future for the world. Best wishes for a successful term ahead!" Modi had said on X.

Trump Presidency 2.0

Last week, Trump took the presidential oath indoors under the Capitol rotunda in Washington, D.C. The ceremony was attended by his wife Melania, daughter Ivanka, son-in-law Jared Kushner, and prominent business tycoons such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Tim Cook. Trump's running mate, JD Vance, was sworn in as US Vice President before him.

Trump’s return to the White House came as a remarkable political comeback, four years after leaving Washington amidst controversy following his unsuccessful attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. His victory over Democratic rival Kamala Harris in the November 5 election was widely regarded as one of the most significant political comebacks in U.S. history.

Despite surviving two assassination attempts, two presidential impeachments, and a criminal conviction, Trump secured a decisive win. His presidency now aims to implement sweeping changes in policies related to immigration, tariffs, and energy.
