PIL Seeks Action Against Union Minister Over 'Defamatory Remarks' Against Rahul Gandhi

The plea has been filed by one Surjit Singh Yadav, who has contended that he is aggrieved by Ravneet Singh Bittu's remarks against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made in a press brief on September 15.

A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Delhi High Court seeking action against Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu over his allegedly defamatory remarks against Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

The PIL seeks registration of a complaint against the Union Minister Bittu for his allegedly derogatory, misleading and false statements against the Congress leader.

The plea has been filed by one Surjit Singh Yadav, who has contended that he is aggrieved by Ravneet Singh Bittu's remarks against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made in a press brief on September 15.

“The remarks made by respondent No. 2 (Ravneet Singh Bittu) can escalate tensions between the ruling party and the opposition. It may lead to heightened confrontations in parliamentary sessions and public debates. This kind of language can deepen existing political divides,” the plea read.

The plea quoted the remarks by Bittu, where he allegedly said that Rahul Gandhi is not an Indian, he has spent most of his time outside.

"He does not love his country much because he goes abroad and says everything in a wrong way...The people who are most wanted, separatists, and experts in making bombs, guns and shells, have appreciated what Rahul Gandhi has said. The enemies of the country who try to blow up planes, trains, and roads, they are in support of Rahul Gandhi...If there should be an award to catch the number one terrorist and the biggest enemy of the country, it should be on Rahul Gandhi," the plea read.

The PIL has termed these remarks by Bittu not only baseless but also said that they can incite hatred and violence which has cause widespread protests to take place in many parts of the country.

Yadav's plea further adds that the inflammatory nature of the remarks made by the respondent No. 2 has caused public unrest and violence and has the propensity to instigate violence and clash among groups resulting in disturbance of public order.
