Patiala Clash: Mastermind Barjinder Parwana Remanded To 4 Day Police Custody

Patiala Clash: Inspector Shaminder Singh of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Patiala squad nabbed Barjinder Singh Parwana at the Mohali airport.

New Delhi: Barjinder Singh Parwana, the suspected mastermind and major conspirator behind the violent confrontations in Punjab's Patiala, was sentenced to four days in police custody on Sunday, news agency ANI reported.

At 7.20 a.m., the accused was flown from Mumbai to Mohali airport on a Vistara flight. Inspector Shaminder Singh of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Patiala squad nabbed him at the Mohali airport.

Outside the Kali Mata shrine on Friday, violence occurred between members of the Shiv Sena, who had organised an "anti-Khalistan" march, and Sikh activists and Nihangs carrying swords. According to police officials, both sides threw stones at each other during the altercation, which wounded at least four people, including two police officers.

So far, the police have named 25 suspects in six FIRs filed in relation to the event on Friday, which left four people injured. The state's home affairs and justice department halted mobile internet and SMS services from 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Even as Patiala was crawling back to normalcy with security troops keeping a strict monitor, the Punjab government dispatched three top police officers, including an inspector general, on Saturday.

Who Is Barjinder Singh Parwana?

Parwana, a resident of Rajpura, lives in Gobind Singh Nagar near Gagan Chowk. He is a self-styled chief of the Damdami Taksal Jatha in Rajpura.

Parwana went to Singapore in 2007 and spent 17 to 18 months there. After returning from Singapore, he started delivering religious discourses and started the Damdami Taksal Jatha in Rajpura.

Parwana currently has four FIRs lodged against him.
