Parliament Monsoon Session LIVE: Lok Sabha passes OBC Bill, Both Houses Adjourned Till Tomorrow

Background

Parliament Monsoon Session LIVE:  Parliament gave nod to 3 bills on Monday and a slew of bills will be proposed in the session on Tuesday.

The Lok Sabha introduced the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2021. The Bill amends the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order of 1950 and permits the Parliament to modify the list of notified STs in it. The Bill also aims to restore power to the states to identify backward classes.

Two other bills — Limited Liability Partnership (Amendment) Bill, 2021 and the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2021 — were passed in the house.

Also, Rajya passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which seeks to amend the Central Universities Act, 2009, to provide for the establishment of a university in the Union territory of Ladakh. While the Parliament functioned to some extent on Monday, opposition continued to create ruckus in the house and amid continued protests by the Opposition demanding a discussion on the Pegasus spyware row, Minister of State (Defence) Ajay Bhatt on Monday told the Parliament that the Defence Ministry had not made any transaction with the Israeli NSO Group. Pegasus spyware is a product of NSO Group.

The Opposition is likely to support the OBC Bill which will be discussed in the Lok Sabha today. The bill seeks to give states the right to make their own list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

Trinamool Congress MP Derek O' Brien on Tuesday said the Opposition will not let the government "bulldoze" General Insurance Bill in Rajya Sabha. "Government will try to bulldoze General Insurance Bill in Rajya Sabha. The Opposition will not sit in our seats and suck lollipops, as every rule and precedent is slaughtered. We will all oppose this, like we did the draconian Farm Bills," the TMC MP said.

Demand for discussion on agriculture accepted in Rajya Sabha: Narendra Singh Tomar

Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar while speaking to the media today said that the demand for a discussion on agriculture was accepted in Rajya Sabha.

"Since the beginning of the Monsoon session of Parliament, the Govt of India has been saying that we're ready to hold a detailed discussion on any subject including those related to agriculture. Demand for a discussion on agriculture was accepted in Rajya Sabha today. As soon as it began, Congress, AAP & TMC adopted an undemocratic attitude. Congress is not able to digest the fact that farmers are prospering with the new govt policies. The attitude of Congress & TMC during the discussion in Rajya Sabha has dealt a major blow to democracy & proves that there is nothing black in the new farm laws. Black can only be seen in the clothes of Opposition leaders."
