Parkash Singh Badal, the patriarch of the Shiromani Akali Dal, died on Tuesday at 8.30 pm. He was 95. The former Punjab chief minister was admitted to the ICU of Fortis Hospital in Mohali on Sunday after complaining of breathing difficulties.
Badal, a five-time Punjab chief minister, was hospitalised in June of last year with gastritis and bronchial asthma.
Badal, who was born on December 8, 1927, in Punjab's Abul Khurana village, had been involved in Indian politics for over five decades. He served as Punjab's chief minister five times. His political career had been defined by his dedication to the welfare of his state's citizens.
Badal was elected to the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the first time in 1957 when he was 29 years old and the youngest legislator in the Punjab Assembly. He was first appointed chief minister of Punjab in 1970, and his tenure was focused on the development of the state's rural areas. After a period of Emergency, he was re-elected as chief minister of Punjab in 1977, and his term focused on strengthening the cooperative movement in Punjab.
In 1997, Badal was sworn in for the third time as chief minister of Punjab, and he continued to work for the state's development. From 2007 to 2012, he served as the chief minister of Punjab, overseeing the development of cities in the state while focusing on rural development. From 2012 to 2017, Badal served as Punjab's chief minister for the fifth time.
Badal was instrumental in bridging divides between different communities, and his contribution to the growth of agriculture and rural development in Punjab is widely recognised.

As a mark of respect for Parkash Singh Badal, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) declared a two-day state mourning on Tuesday. The national flag will be flown at half-mast, and there will be no official entertainment, according to the MHA.
