Parents seek 'mercy killing' for their 9-month-old, Govt offers aid

New Delhi : The Andhra Pradesh government has offered to help Gyanasai, a nine-month old child suffering from a rare liver ailment, after her parents, unable to stand her pain, approached a court in Chittoor district asking for mercy killing. The child is suffering from Biliary Atresia, a congenital condition that caused the baby to be born without a bile duct, which in turn lead to liver damage. Doctors had recommended a liver transplant for Sai within two months. One of the parents is a possible liver donor but they didn’t have the kind of money the treatment needed. So, the parents of the baby- Ramanappa and his wife Saraswati, sought the court’s intervention to have the state bear the medical expense of the child’s medical treatment or allow her mercy killing. State Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas took up the matter with Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who announced that help would be provided to the child from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. The surgery will take place in Chennai.
