Police can designate him a wanted accused and initiate process to declare him an absconder

Mumbai: In a major development, Mumbai's Esplanade Court on Wednesday allowed Police's application to declare former Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh as a proclaimed offender in an extortion case lodged against him.

Now, Police can designate him a wanted accused and initiate process to declare him an absconder, Special Public Prosecutor Shekhar Jagtap said.

Jagtap also informed that if Singh doesn't come before the law within 30 days, Mumbai Police will initiate the process for the attachment of his properties.

The development follows an application filed by the Mumbai Police seeking a declaration to the effect with regard to Singh, who is 'untraceable' since several months now.

Allowing the police plea, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate S.B. Bhajpale passed the order against Singh.

Before the order, courts in Mumbai and Thane had issued non-bailable warrants against the ex-Mumbai top cop, who is presently designated as Director-General, Maharashtra Home Guards.

So far, three non-bailable warrants have been issued against Singh, whose current whereabouts are not known since the past several months.

Currently, political circles in Maharashtra are agog with speculation that the former Mumbai Police Commissioner may have fled the country.

In April, Singh created a sensation by firing a 'letter-missile' to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray alleging corruption by the then Nationalist Congress Party's Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

The ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra has registered cases of alleged extortion, cheating, forgery, and set up a one-man enquiry commission to probe the charges against Singh.
