'Samvidhan Sadan': PM Modi Suggests New Name For Old Parliament, Says 'Dignity Shouldn't Be Diminished'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested that the old Parliament building be known as 'Samvidhan Sadan'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday proposed that the old Parliament building be known as ‘Samvidhan Sadan’ as the MPs walked to the new Parliament building. Addressing an event at the Central Hall of the old Parliament building, PM Modi recounted the key moments and decisions that were taken in the old Parliament building. He commemorated that the tricolour flag and the national anthem were adopted in this Parliament and India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru gave his ‘tryst with destiny’ speech here.

"Today, we are going to do 'Shree Ganesha' of new future as we move to the new Parliament building." "It was here in 1947 that the British did the transfer of power, our Central Hall is a witness of that historic moment,"he said.

The PM also stressed upon India’s aspiration and to become the third largest economy in the world.

Towards the end of his speech, PM Modi put forward a proposal in front of Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla that the old Parliament building be known as ‘Samvidhan Sadan’.

“Today we are bidding farewell to this building and going to the new parliament and it is auspicious that we'll be sitting on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi,” Modi said.

“But I want to propose a thought in front of you and I hope you both will think it over and make a decision,” he said addressing Dhankhar and Birla.

“As we move to the new building, the dignity of this place should never be diminished. We should not leave this place by merely calling it the old Parliament and so I request that this should be known as Samvidhan Sadan,” the PM said.

“It would always inspire us and when we would call it Samvidhan Sadan it would attach the memories of those great men who used to sit here in the Constituent Assembly …and we should not let go of this opportunity to offer it as a gift to the coming generation,” Modi noted.
