North India Sees Multiple Road Accidents As Dense Fog Hits Delhi And Neighbouring States. Key Points

As the temperature dipped and fog increased in Northern India, Delhi and neighbouring states saw multiple road accidents due to poor visibility.

Multiple vehicle pile-ups and collisions due to fog on highways in northern India were reported over the last 48 hours. Besides the season’s first dense fog has also hit rail and and air traffic. 

The fog has reduced visibility to 25-50 metres in many places in Delhi, Amritsar, Patiala, Bareilly, Lucknow, and Bahraich. According to news agency PTI, satellite images showed a thick layer of fog extending from Punjab to east Uttar Pradesh across Haryana and Delhi. 

Here are a few fog-related accidents, in which vehicles crashed into each other. 

  • At least three persons were killed and eight were injured after three vehicles piled up on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway on Monday morning due to dense fog. The accident occurred in the Erva Katra police station area. A truck, a sleeper bus, and a car crashed into each other, police said.
  • A woman was killed and 22 travelling were injured when a bus collided with a truck near a village in Haryana's Bahadurgarh on Monday due to dense fog in the area. The accident occurred on the Jhajjar-Sonipat Road in Jhajjar district.

  • Another accident was reported in Greater Noida, wherein an unidentified vehicle that was being driven on the wrong side of the road hit two cars on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway amid dense. The driver of the errant vehicle, however, managed to flee the spot. 

  • In another road crash on Monday, an empty school bus and a car collided on Bilaspur Road in the Dankaur police station area. No one was injured in the incident. 

  • On Sunday also, Haryana reported a highway pile-up due to low visibility. Seven vehicles crashed into one another near Aurangabad village in Yamunanagar. 

Police in different states have appealed to motorists to be extra alert and drive slowly in foggy conditions. The IMD also issued an advisory, saying difficult driving conditions on highways, some collisions and tripping of power lines are also possible. "Likely train delays, diversons and cancellations. Airport operations are likely to be affected with flight delays and cancellations," it said. 

 A northern railway spokesperson said: "Fog affecting train movement today. We have taken precautionary measures. Speed restrictions are put in place in such conditions. Safety is our priority. Passengers are informed about schedules through announcements and other means."
